Guidance Department

Guidance Counsellors at Walkerville Collegiate Institute are essential mentors, providing invaluable academic and personal guidance to students. They assist in course selection, offer support in career planning, and facilitate personal development. Families and students are encouraged to connect with Guidance Counselors for assistance in navigating challenges, setting educational goals, and making informed decisions about their educational journey and future paths.

Role of Guidance Counsellors at Walkerville Collegiate Institute:

 1. Academic Guidance:
  • Assist students in course selection and academic planning.
  • Provide guidance on academic goals and pathways.
 2. Career Planning:
  • Offer support in exploring career options and pathways.
  • Help students make informed decisions about their future.
3. Personal Development:
  •   Address personal and social concerns impacting students.
  • Provide guidance on personal growth and well-being.
4. Supports for In-Risk Students:
  • Identify and provide support for students facing challenges.
  • Collaborate with Student Success Teachers and other support services.
5. Transition Planning:
  • Facilitate smooth transitions between grade levels and schools.
  • Organize events to prepare students for post-secondary education or employment.
 6. Connectivity with Other Departments:
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, and other departments to ensure holistic student support.
  • Work closely with Learning Support Teachers, Student Success Teachers, and other educators to address individual student needs.
7. Whole Team Approach:
  • Engage in a collaborative team approach to student care.
  • Work with administrators, teachers, Child and Youth Workers, and other support staff to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.
8. Mental Health and Well-being:
  • Provide guidance on managing stress, mental health, and overall well-being.
  • Collaborate with mental health professionals to support students in need.
9. Post-Secondary Planning:
  • Assist students in exploring post-secondary education options.
  • Provide information on college and university applications, scholarships, and career readiness.
