Celebrating Black History Month

On Monday, schools across the Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) came together to raise the Pan-African flag in recognition of Black History Month. This annual event serves as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and commitment to justice and equality.

At the GECDSB board office, Director of Education Vicki Houston addressed staff, students, and community members, emphasizing the importance of honoring the contributions of Black communities while acknowledging the ongoing work required to create a more equitable future.

"This moment is a powerful reminder of the ongoing journey toward justice, equality, and recognition of the profound contributions that Black communities have made—and continue to make—to our shared history and future," said Houston.

She reflected on the rich Black history of Windsor-Essex County, noting both the stories of strength and achievement as well as the systemic barriers that Black individuals have faced and continue to challenge.

"As we raise the Pan-African flag, we recognize the enduring legacy of Black culture, art, education, and advocacy," she stated. "We honour those who have paved the way, from the global effort to end slavery to the civil rights movement and beyond, including many unsung heroes from our own communities."

While Black History Month is a time for reflection and celebration, Houston also emphasized the need for ongoing action and education beyond the month of February.

"Black history is made every day, not just in February," she said. "It is incumbent upon all of us to learn from the past and work toward a future where equality and justice are not ideals, but realities for everyone."

The raising of the Pan-African flag across GECDSB schools serves as both a symbol of pride and a reminder of the work still left to do. Houston called on students, staff, and the broader community to listen, learn, and lead with empathy and respect.

As part of the event, Clarese Carter, Create Your Future Advisor, shared powerful and moving words with the group. Her speech was followed by inspiring remarks from Oyin (Walkerville) and Jalen (Kennedy), both members of the Black Student Advisory Council (BSAC). They spoke about the significance of Black History Month, Black excellence, and the importance of representation—highlighting why moments like the Pan-African flag raising are so meaningful.
