Statement from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

December 10, 2024

Dear Members of the GECDSB Community,

Reflecting on the past year, I must acknowledge that our Board of Trustees has encountered its share of challenges—both anticipated and unforeseen. Within our own board room and beyond, we’ve faced situations that tested our resilience, cooperation, and unwavering commitment to our students.

What guided me through these difficult moments was keeping our core principles at the forefront. As an educational organization, we are devoted to creating confident learners in our classrooms, engaging our communities in meaningful and respectful ways, and demonstrating ethical stewardship of the precious resources entrusted to us. Our mission statement serves as a constant reminder of our purpose and value, helping us maintain a steady course, even when not everyone aligns perfectly on the issues we face.

As Chair, it is my responsibility to help foster a positive mindset within an atmosphere of trust. I believe this is best achieved through a close, collaborative working relationship with our Director of Education. The values that define our mission are lived out daily by Director Houston and our team of Senior Administrators. I feel fortunate to work alongside an educational leader who consistently demonstrates knowledge, professionalism, decisiveness, and resilience. Her strength is an asset to us all, and I am grateful for her leadership.

Our appreciation extends far beyond the Board and administration. Trustees understand that the exceptional work of our staff—in every department, every school, and every classroom—is fundamental to our students’ success and well-being. Your dedication and professionalism truly matter. We value your tireless efforts, recognize your contributions, and sincerely thank you for all that you do, no matter what obstacles come our way.

I also want to acknowledge the support of my fellow trustees. In particular, Trustee Nelson, who served as Vice-Chair over the past year, showed courage and commitment in taking on her additional responsibilities. Her partnership has been greatly appreciated. I am equally grateful to Melissa Laboeuf for her constant helpfulness, dedication, and attention to detail, which have been invaluable.

Looking ahead, we will be implementing our newly adopted governance bylaws—policies rooted in best practices and designed to sharpen our focus on student achievement and well-being. I recognize there may be bumps along the road as we navigate this new model, but I am confident that through cooperation, patience, and respectful, well-reasoned conversation, we will not only move forward but also thrive.

We are now at the midpoint of our term as trustees. I hope the coming months are inspired by a strong belief in our work as a school board and in each other’s commitment to our shared vision: “Building Tomorrow Together—Every Learner, Every Day.” The work ahead will require focus, determination, and collaboration, but I have no doubt that we are all prepared for the tasks that lie before us.

As we approach the holiday break, I encourage everyone to take time to rest and enjoy the company of family and friends. May the New Year bring happiness, good health, and, as I will never cease to hope, lasting peace for all.

Sincerely,

Gale Simko-Hatfield

Chair of the Board of Trustees

How to Communicate with the Board or Individual Trustees

The Board welcomes and values input from students, parents, staff and members of the community regarding Board policies, practices, related issues and its overall education system.

There are established methods in place to assist with effective communication:

  • Students are encouraged to approach their Student Trustee.
  • Parents are encouraged to work through School Councils who share concerns with the Board through the Greater Essex County Parent Involvement Committee.
  • Staff should refer to the formal communication protocol where appropriate or contact the Director's Office for direction.
  • Members of the community should contact the appropriate Trustee representing their constituency.
