At the GECDSB, we are committed to supporting every child’s individual needs to ensure they have the best start in their educational journey. In this section, you’ll find information about the various supports available for students in Kindergarten, including those entering French Immersion, children needing speech and language support, and students for whom English is an additional language. We also provide resources to help prepare both you and your child for a successful transition into Kindergarten. No matter your child’s background or needs, we have a range of supports and services to ensure they thrive in a positive, nurturing learning environment.

Register for Kindergarten

 Frequently Asked Questions

What supports are there for children going to French Immersion?
All families registering for Kindergarten will be provided with the opportunity to enroll in French Immersion. The program begins with immersion through oral language. As your child learns and grows, the school team will provide a variety of supports and resources for your child to be successful in the program.  Additional French Immersion program information is available here.
Are supports available for speech and language development?

It is recommended that families speak directly to their school’s main office team who will connect the family with the school’s Learning Support Teacher (LST).  The LST will have a detailed conversation with the family about their child, and the potential supports available.  The GECDSB has a team of Speech-Language Pathologists, who support Kindergarten educator teams with oral language development. In addition, the GECDSB works in partnership with the John McGivney Children’s Centre who work in partnership and may support occupational and speech and language concerns.

What supports are available for children whose first language is not English?
The GECDSB is proud to be part of a highly diverse and culturally rich community. Many of the families within GECDSB have a home language that is not English, and we encourage children to continue to learn and speak in their home languages with their family. The GECDSB has a number of strategies and supports for a student who may be learning English as an additional second language. Please speak with your home school and educator team to learn more about the supports that may be available for your child.
Are there any additional resources that can help me prepare my child for Kindergarten?
Please find additional resources for families, as well as ways to support your child’s transition, on the GECDSB webpage – Getting Ready for Kindergarten.

In addition, please refer to:

  • Windsor-Essex Country Health Unit – Ready for School.
  • Ministry of Ontario’s website – Preparing for Kindergarten.
  • Ministry of Ontario’s website – Full-day Kindergarten – Preparing Your Child.
  • Families can also visit any of our GECDSB EarlyON child and Family Centres. This is done in partnership with the City of Windsor.  No pre-registration is required.  These free programs provide opportunities for children 0-6 years of age and their caregivers to engage in fun learning activities together.
