Tuesday, September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Since Monday, September 22nd, the Greater Essex County District School Board has flown the Every Child Matters flag at all district sites.
This year carries particular significance as it marks the tenth anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Final Reports and 94 Calls to Action. It is a powerful reminder of the work that has been done, and the significant work that still lies ahead.
Throughout this past week, and especially on September 30th, we are called upon to acknowledge the painful legacy of residential schools and honour the enduring strength of Indigenous communities.
The Every Child Matters flag stands as a symbol of remembrance, commitment, and hope. It reminds us that every child matters, not only in our classrooms, but in our hearts and in our actions. As educators, leaders, and community members, we have a shared responsibility to ensure that truth is taught, reconciliation is pursued, and Indigenous voices are heard and honoured.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to pause, acknowledge, and remember. It is also a call to action. Our future cannot be realized without reconciling with our past. It is our collective responsibility to embed this mindset into our daily lives through how we teach, learn, and engage with Indigenous colleagues, peers, and community partners.
I encourage all staff and students to wear orange tomorrow as we observe this important day together with reflection, recognition, and respect.
Thank you,
Vicki Houston
