Logan Allen, Sandwich Secondary student

Meet Logan, a dedicated student from Sandwich Secondary School who is set to achieve a major milestone this summer—earning his pilot's license. Logan's passion for aviation has been a constant throughout his life, fueled by his family’s involvement in the field and his active participation in aviation events. His journey, supported by the Aviation Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program, has been both exciting and transformative. We had the chance to sit down with Logan to learn more about his motivation, the impact of the SHSM program, and his advice for future aviators. Here’s what he had to say:

What motivated you to pursue a pilot's license, and how has your journey been so far?

I have always had a curiosity for aviation. Since I was a young child, I have been surrounded by family members involved in aviation and have attended many aviation events, which furthered my interest. I have always wanted to get my pilot's license to achieve my dream. My high school experience in the Aviation SHSM has deepened my interest and knowledge of aviation. My part-time summer job at the Canadian Aviation Museum and co-op at Gateway Aviation (completed as part of the SHSM requirements) have also solidified my motivation and confidence to obtain my pilot's license.

What aspects of the Aviation SHSM program at Sandwich Secondary School have been most beneficial in preparing you for your pilot’s license?

The Aviation SHSM provides many important and required aviation certifications for free. For instance, the radio certification, which is crucial for obtaining a pilot's license, was covered. The flight simulator at school offered excellent practice for flying aircraft and following procedures, which will be immensely helpful in my actual flight lessons. The program also helps develop a network in the aviation industry through co-op experiences and field trips. Having a knowledgeable and encouraging mentor like Mr. Jasey has been invaluable in preparing for my journey and obtaining my pilot's license.

Can you describe a particularly challenging moment during your training and how you managed to overcome it?

I haven’t faced a challenging moment yet in my flight training since it starts this summer. However, I am confident that the experience and knowledge I’ve gained from the Aviation SHSM program will be incredibly beneficial in overcoming any future challenges. It has helped me navigate the complex process of applying for my commercial pilot's license.

What advice would you give to students who are just starting their journey in aviation, based on your experiences in the program and your flight training?

I would recommend taking full advantage of all the certifications available through the SHSM program, as they are invaluable. For example, First Aid Training, Radio Certification, and Leadership Training significantly enhance your resume and job opportunities. Additionally, participating in field trips and networking opportunities provided by the program can help you navigate your career goals and path.

Logan’s journey is a testament to the powerful impact of the Aviation SHSM program and the boundless opportunities available to those passionate about aviation. As he prepares to take to the skies, his story serves as an inspiration for all aspiring pilots.
