Cereal Box Challenge Award Presentation

The spirit of generosity was on full display once again as the Greater Essex County District School Board community came together for the 23rd Annual Cereal Box Challenge. Students and staff from Talbot Trail, Glenwood, Bellewood, Southwood, Central, and McWilliam Public Schools worked collectively to support GECDSB and community breakfast and snack programs, collecting more than 2.7 million grams of cereal this year.

A new champion emerged in this year’s friendly competition. Central Public School earned the Cereal Box Challenge trophy for collecting the highest average number of grams per student! Trustee Kim McKinley attended the school’s December assembly to officially present the trophy, celebrating the students’ efforts and their well-earned bragging rights until next year.

What started as a small initiative has grown into a far-reaching program that now supports schools and community organizations across Windsor-Essex. The Cereal Box Challenge was originally launched by Trustee Kim McKinley’s daughter at Oakwood Public School with the goal of providing breakfast and snack items to schools in Windsor’s west end. Over time, participation expanded to include multiple South Windsor schools, and today the program delivers donations to more than 33 GECDSB schools as well as four local community organizations.

The continued success of the challenge is rooted in Trustee Kim McKinley’s long-standing commitment and leadership. Her dedication has helped build a culture of giving that inspires students, staff, and families to take part year after year.

The Cereal Box Challenge would not be possible without the generosity and hard work of community partners and volunteers. The Greater Essex County District School Board extends sincere thanks to:

  • Every staff member and student who work so tirelessly to make this donation event possible each year, through organizing and bringing in cereal boxes
  • Haley Furtado and SHARP Buslines, whose volunteer drivers ensure donations are transported safely and efficiently
  • Doug Robinson and the Three Aces Moving team, for their ongoing support with logistics and large-scale deliveries
  • Greater Essex ETFO and an anonymous donor, for their generous financial contributions
  • Paul Finlayson, Danielle Richer, Kim McKinley, Bob McKinley, and Gregory McKinley, for their continued assistance and support

Through collective effort and compassion, the Cereal Box Challenge continues to strengthen our community and make a meaningful difference for students supporting students across Windsor-Essex.
