The Greater Essex County District School Board (GECDSB) offers a variety of eLearning courses that students can take online instead of in the classroom. These course offerings span across different grade levels, subject areas, and course types or pathways. 

For more information on eLearning courses, talk to your guidance counselor or call David Gomes, District eLearning contact at 519-255-3200 ext. 10226.

How to access your courses

To access your eLearning courses you can either:

  1. Log into your class using your Office 365 account if you are a GECDSB student or staff member
  2. Log in as another user through the Brightspace for Parents Portal if you are not a GECDSB student or staff member

Requirements to register

To register for eLearning courses, you must:

  • Be currently enrolled in Secondary School
  • Have the prerequisite or have taken the course previously

Course offerings

During the 2021-2022 School Year, the GECDSB is offering the following eLearning courses. Learn details about these courses, including ​course descriptions and prerequisites below.

Please note courses may change from year to year to support student's preferences and the GECDSB eLearning capacity.

Semester 1

Semester 1 includes the following course.

EMS3O – Media Studies

Course level: Grade 11

Prerequisite: Grade 10 English, Academic or Applied

This course will allow you to:

  • Understand media communication in the twenty-first century
  • Use media effectively and responsibly
  • Analyse the forms and messages of a variety of media works and audience responses
  • Create your own media works
  • Develop critical thinking skills, aesthetic and ethical judgement
  • Gain skills in viewing, representing, listening, speaking, reading, and writing​

HSB4U - Challenge and Change in Society

Course level: Grade 12 University Preparation

Prerequisite: Any university or a university or college preparation course in social sciences and humanities, English, or Canadian and world studies​

This course focuses on the use of social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies. It helps students investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour and their impact on society. Students will:

  • Critically analyse how and why cultural, social, and behavioural patterns change over time
  • Explore the ideas of social theorists and use those ideas to analyse causes of and responses to challenges such as technological change, deviance, and global inequalities
  • Discover ways in which social science research methods can be used to study social change

PSK4U - Introductory Kinesiology 

Course level: Grade 12 University Preparation​​

Prerequisite: Any Grade 11 university or a university or college preparation course in science, or any Grade 11 or 12 course in health and physical education​

​This course focuses on the study of human movement and the systems, factors, and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the:

  • Effects of physical activity on health and performance
  • Evolution of physical activity and sport
  • Physiological, psychological, and social factors that influence an individual's participation in physical activity and sport

This course prepares students for university programs in physical education and health, kinesiology, health sciences, health studies, recreation, and sports administration.​​​

EWC4U - The Writer's Craft

Course level: Grade 12 University Preparation

Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, University Preparation
This course focuses on the craft of writing. Students will:

  • Analyse models of effective writing
  • Use a workshop approach to produce a range of works
  • Identify and use techniques required for specialized forms of writing
  • Identify effective ways to improve the quality of their writing
  • Complete a major paper as part of a creative or analytical independent study project
  • Investigate opportunities for publication and for writing careers

ICS​​​​3U - Introduction to Computer Science

Course level: Grade 11 University Preparation

Prerequisite: None​

This course introduces students to computer science. Students will:

  • Design software independently and as part of a team
  • Use industry-standard programming tools and apply the software development life-cycle model
  • Write and use subprograms within computer programs
  • Develop creative solutions for various types of problems as their understanding of the computing environment grows
  • Explore environmental and ergonomic issues, emerging research in computer science, and global career trends in computer-related fields

Semester 2

Semester 2 includes the following courses.

PPZ3C – Health for Life

Course level: Grade 11 College Preparation​

Prerequisite: None

​This course emphasizes the concept of wellness. It addresses all aspects of well-being including physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, and social. It also promotes healthy eating, physical activity, and building and maintaining a positive sense of self. This course allows students to:

  • Examine the factors that influence their own health practices and factors that contribute to the development of healthy communities
  • Develop the skills necessary to make healthy choices and create a personal wellness plan
  • Design initiatives that encourage others to lead healthy, active lives

The course prepares students for college programs in health sciences, fitness, wellness, and health promotion. 

GWL3O – Designing Your Future

Grade level: ​Grade 11 Open

Prerequisite: None​

This course prepares students to make successful transitions to postsecondary destinations as they investigate specific postsecondary options based on their skills, interests, and personal characteristics. Students will:

  • Explore the realities and opportunities of the workplace
  • Examine factors that affect success
  • Refine their job-search and employability skills
  • Develop their portfolios with a focus on their targeted destination
  • Develop an action plan for future success

HHS4C – Families in Canada

Course level: Grade 12 College Preparation​

Prerequisite: Any university, college, or a university or college preparation course in social sciences and humanities, English, or Canadian and world studies​​

This course allows students to:

  • Develop an understanding of social science theories as they apply to individual development, the development of intimate relationships, and family and parent-child relationships
  • Explore a range of issues relating to the development of individuals and families in contemporary Canadian society as well as in other cultures and historical periods
  • Develop the investigative skills required to conduct research on individuals, intimate relationships, and parent-child roles and relationships in Canada

BBB4M – International Business Fundamentals

Course level: Grade 12 University or College Preparation​​​

Prerequisite:  None

This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy. It also explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will:

  • Explore the techniques and strategies associated with marketing and distribution
  • Learn how international business is managed effectively

This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management.

CHI4U – Canada: History, Identity, and Culture

Course level: Grade 12 University Preparation

Prerequisite: Any university or a university or college preparation course in Canadian and world studies, English, or social sciences and humanities​

​This course traces the history of Canada, with a focus on the evolution of our national identity and culture. It also explores the identity and culture of various groups that make up Canada. Students will:

  • Explore various developments and events, both national and international, from precontact to the present
  • Examine various communities in Canada and how they have contributed to identity and heritage in Canada
  • Investigate the development of culture and identity, including national identity, in Canada and how and why they have changed throughout the country's history
  • Extend their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence

MDM4U – Mathematics of Data Management

Course level: MDM4U - Mathematics of Data Management​

Grade 12 University Preparation​

Prerequisite: Functions, Grade 11, University Preparation, or Functions and Applications, Grade 11, University or College Preparation​ 

This course broadens students' understanding of mathematics as it relates to managing data. Students will:

  • Apply methods for organizing and analysing large amounts of information
  • Solve problems involving probability and statistics
  • Carry out an investigation that integrates statistical concepts and skills
  • Refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics

This course will help students planning to enter university programs in business, the social sciences, and the humanities.

HZT4U – Philosophy: Theories and Questions

Course level: Grade 12 University Preparation​​

Prerequisite: Any university or a university or college preparation course in social sciences and humanities, English, or Canadian and world studies ​ 

​This course will cover at least three of the following branches: metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, aesthetics. Students will:

  • Learn to understand the nature of philosophy and philosophical reasoning skills
  • Explore specialized branches of philosophy
  • Develop critical thinking and philosophical reasoning skills as they form and evaluate arguments related to a variety of philosophical questions and theories
  • Develop research and inquiry skills related to the study and practice of philosophy

The GECDSB is a member of the Ontario eLearning Consortium (OeLC). The OeLC is a group of Ontario School Boards, both public and catholic, who have agreed to accept students from other member boards into their eLearning courses. This collaboration provides many more eLearning opportunities for our students.
