Waste Minimization

At the Greater Essex County District School Board, we encourage schools to actively participate in environmental stewardship using these principles:

  • Refuse
  • Reduce
  • Reuse
  • Recycle

Find out how your school can work to reduce the amount of waste produced by participating in the EcoSchools program.

Waste minimization tips

Follow these tips to find out how you can help.

Refuse

The best way to save the world is not to use plastic products at all. If that's not possible, find an environmentally friendly alternative or reduce the amount that you use. Ask yourself, do I really need this?

  • Plastic pollution is overtaking the world's waterways and land
  • Only about 9% of recyclable plastic is actually recycled!
  • Two Anderdon Public School students prompted Board trustees to approve a motion for the GECDSB to eliminate the use of many single use plastics by January 2022, in line with the Government of Canada's plans

The first phase of elimination includes the following products made of plastic:

  • Styrofoam
  • Straws
  • Bottled water
  • Shopping bags
  • Cutlery

Reduce

Here are some tips to help you reduce waste:

  • Photocopy or print materials on both sides of the paper whenever possible
  • Use electronic methods such as email or websites to communicate with families and students instead of printing
  • Establish systems and routines for composting and waste-free lunches to minimize food waste

Reuse

Try these tips to help reuse materials in the classroom and school:

  • Create a reuse it box for half-used paper that could be used for art projects or other schoolwork
  • Promote the use of reusable dishes such as mugs, glasses, plates and utensils in staff room and avoid using single-use plastics or disposable plates
  • Donate items you do not want (your trash could be someone else's treasure)
  • Repair broken items instead of throwing them away

Recycle

Here are some tips for minimizing waste through recycling:

  • Follow the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority's Blue Box and Red Box Program
  • Place recycling bins at strategic places within the classroom and school to encourage the recycling of paper and plastic products
  • Recycling photocopier toner bottles and printer cartridges and make sure there are clearly marked places to recycle these items
  • View the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority Recycling Guide to find out what items you can recycle.

Recycling container orders

Schools can complete the Recycling Bin Order form to get more recycling bins to ensure recyclables stay out of the landfills. Please submit the form by email [link to [email protected]].

Waste Action Plans, Waste Reviews and Monitoring

Action plans and waste reviews will allow your school community to work together to minimize waste. Please reach out to Kathleen Quenneville at [email protected] to access a Waste Action Plan template, Waste Audit Worksheet and Effective Recycling Checklist.

Facts about waste

  • Canadians produce more garbage per person than any other country
  • Garbage costs a lot to transport and process
  • Garbage fills up our landfills and landfills releases greenhouse gas
  • Landfills pollute our soils and waters
  • New products to replace the old costs a lot to make and ship

Make small changes to your everyday habits and make a difference to the health of the planet.
