Math Vision and Task Force

Our math vision

Our math vision is:

“The GECDSB provides mathematics education that engages and empowers students through collaboration, communication, inquiry, critical thinking and ​​problem solving, to support each student's learning and nurture a positive attitude towards mathematics.”

Purpose of vision

The purpose of the math vision is to support schools and educators by helping them:

  • Reflect on the needs of their students
  • Address students' needs as part of their ongoing School Improvement Plans

Our roles

To help students achieve success in math, our role is to create conditions for math learning where:

  • ​Competent and knowledgeable educators integrate instruction and assessment
  • Educators and administrators will commit to on-going learning about math and math instruction
  • Learning environments nurture positive attitudes towards math
  • All students have opportunities and support to develop a deep understanding of math

Who developed the math vision?

The GECDSB created the math vision with consultations from a wide variety of stakeholders, including:

  • Elementary and secondary teachers and administrators
  • Program staff
  • Student Success
  • Special Education

Math Task Force committee

To put our math vision into action, we formed a Math Task Force committee. The purpose of the Math Task Force is to:

  • Examine the teaching and learning practices of mathematics from many perspectives
  • Advise Senior Administration and the Board of Trustees on how to best support future planning for the math department

The Math Task Force reports provide a summary of their collective research findings and recommendations for the best teaching approaches to math. If you are an educator or GECDSB school, use these reports as a guide to support your math curriculums and teaching methods.
