StudyInsured by Ingle International Insurance is the trusted medical insurance provider for the GECDSB’s International Students. Established in 1946, StudyInsured offers complete coverage policies to provide students the protection they need while studying in Canada.
Since 2017, StudyInsured has made an annual donation to the Greater Essex County District School Board to establish the StudyInsured International Students Scholarship. The recipients of this scholarship are graduating International Students who have been accepted to attend university or college in Ontario and who demonstrate academic excellence and active engagement with their school community.
The StudyInsured International Students Scholarship application opens in the spring.
2017-2018
Aiyireti Dilinaer, Sandwich Secondary School |
Aiyireti is an International Student from China who has attended Sandwich Secondary School for the past 2 years. While at Sandwich, Aiyireti quickly became involved in the life of the school. She is a leader of the International Students Club, helping to organize meetings, special events and lead school tours for new students and visitors. As a Peer Tutor, Aiyireti helps International Students to improve their English language skills and tutors all students in math and science. She also organized activities for Sandwich’s Grade 8 Day and is involved in many of the school’s charitable fundraisers. A talented photographer, Aiyireti is a member of the Art Club and recently won first place in an Amateur Photo Contest. She has also volunteered numerous hours for the Sandwich Sabre Bytes, the school’s very successful Robotics team. This past spring, Aiyireti was selected to attend YLCC’s three-day Global Student Leadership Summit along with other international and local students. Aiyireti will study Biochemistry next year at the University of Windsor. |
Meng Jin, Hon. W.C. Kennedy Collegiate Institute |
Meng is an International Student from China who has been a Clipper for the past two years and is a wonderful addition to the Kennedy family. She is Kennedy’s only graduating International Student this year and has made a positive impact on the life of the school. A talented artist, Meng sketched a drawing that the school will hang publicly to portray the spirit of Kennedy Collegiate for all visitors to see. Meng volunteers with elementary students, helping to teach them to sketch, assisting the teacher with supplies and materials and keeping the class organized. Meng was a volunteer at the Social Justice Forum, helping to feed students, lead groups to their meeting rooms and participated in the presentations. Meng will study Management and Organizational Studies at the University of Western Ontario in the fall. |
Ke Qi Wu, Vincent Massey Secondary School |
Ke Qi is an International Student from China who joined the Massey family two years ago. Eager to improve his English language skills, Ke Qi began to seek out opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities in order to talk with as many students as he could. He volunteered as security for the All Night Social, worked as a programmer for the Massey Hackathon, he is a member of the Massey Toast Masters club, the Track & Field team and the DECA club, just to name a few. His ultimate opportunity to speak publicly came when Ke Qi volunteered to share his experience as an International Student and addressed an audience of teachers on a PD Day. Most recently, Ke Qi was invited to attend YLCC’s first-ever Global Student Leadership Summit in London, Ontario. An award-winning participant of many math and chemistry competitions, Ke Qi is looking forward to studying Math at the University of Waterloo in September. |

Shaorui Huo, Sandwich Secondary School |
Shaorui has maintained a very high academic average while studying at Sandwich Secondary. His learning skills, initiative, dedication and work habits are exemplary. As a Grade 12 representative on Student Council, Shaorui has developed excellent leadership skills while organizing school spirit days and Grade 8 Day. Shaorui is also a member of the badminton team, he is a volunteer at the TLC Rest Home and he is on the honour roll. Shaorui was inspired to study accounting by his mother, a Certified Public Accountant who works a bank manager in China. Shaorui plans to continue his education at the University of Ottawa in the Honours Bachelor of Commerce- Accounting Co-Op Program. |
Lizhuo You, Vincent Massey Secondary School |
A student in enriched Functions, Calculus and Physics, Lizhuo has a passion for problem solving. He has written an impressive number of math and computer science contests and consistently finishes in the top 25%. During his time at Massey, Lizhuo has been a member of the debate club, robotics club, ELL club, science club, computer science club and Massey Hacks. He has also volunteered for Massey’s Multicultural Dinner, helps with parent-teacher interviews, assists at swim meets and at the Chinese New Year Gala. He is also on the honour roll. Lizhuo will continue to develop his interest in computer science at the University of Waterloo in the Software Engineering Program. |
Xinyu Li, Riverside Secondary School |
Xinyu has immersed herself in the school and the community while maintaining an excellent academic average. She is involved in Riverside’s annual Fun Run and several intramural sports tournaments including volleyball, basketball and dodgeball. She has dedicated over 100 hours of community service to a local badminton club. Xinyu is a determined honor roll student whose efforts have earned her several academic awards. Dahyeon Choi, W.F. Herman Academy |
In her time at W. F. Herman Academy, Dahyeon has consistently demonstrated an exceptional commitment to her educational program as well as several school and extracurricular based initiatives.
Dahyeon began her journey in the ESL program after arriving from South Korea in 2018 and quickly demonstrated herself to be a very hard- working, dedicated student. Throughout her high school experience, Dahyeon has been active in our school community. She has been a member of our Yearbook Committee, International Student’s Club, and ESL program initiatives. She has taken part in several community based volunteer activities such as volunteering at the Downtown Mission, Food Bank and local Animal Hospital. Her dream is work in a technology related field which she’ll undoubtedly excel at. Dahyeon plans to continue her education at the University of Western Ontario majoring in General Science. |
Mengzhuo Li, Vincent Massey Secondary School |
Mengzhuo Li has been a Massey Mustang since arriving from China in February 2018. She is on the Honour Roll with Distinction, maintaining over a 90% average, while being actively involved in the Massey and local community. Mengzhuo quickly contributed to Massey’s many longstanding traditions including the Multicultural Dinner, Children’s Christmas Party, ELL Leadership Club, Breakfast Club, and one of the schools much newer events, Massey Hacks. In the community, Mehgzhuo volunteers with the Chinese Culture Institute of Great Windsor, helping with the Chinese New Year Gala and children’s chess club. She also dedicates her time to helping at a local retirement home, the Alzheimer Society of Windsor-Essex County and the Essex County Stamp Club. An outstanding student of mathematics, Mengzhuo has written many math contests including the Avogadro Exam, Canadian Senior & Intermediate Math Contest, Euclid and Fermat contests. Mengzhuo is considering studying math, engineering or applied science at university next year. |
Yazdan Nikoo, Riverside Secondary School |
Yazdan is an extremely independent and determined student who arrived at Riverside in February 2019 from Iran. He has maintained an excellent academic record while enthusiastically participating in extracurricular activities and volunteering in the community. Yazdan has been an active member of Riverside’s Social Justice club, the Gay-Straight Alliance and Jack.org, a mental health advocacy group. He has also taken on leadership roles such as taking charge of the live streaming of the OFSAA basketball finals. Perhaps Yazdan’s biggest accomplishment since arriving in Canada has been as a volunteer with the Liberal Party’s 2019 Federal Election campaign. This experience led him all the way to Queen’s Park where he represented the riding of Windsor-Tecumseh in the 2020 Ontario Model Parliament at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. In addition to these endeavours, Yazdan he has been actively volunteering and has accumulated over 200 hours of community service. Yazdan is a very confident young man with a positive attitude, a zeal for life and a passion for advocacy. He has a clear career goal and has designed his education plan, co-curricular activities and volunteerism to support these goals.

2020-2021
Chihyun Ahn, Vincent Massey Secondary School |
Chihyun arrived from Korea in September 2017 and began his high school career in Gr. 9 at Vincent Massey Secondary School. An outstanding academic student, Chihyun received an academic honour award in his Grade 11 year. He is active in many of Massey’s extracurricular activities as well as a strong community volunteer. Chihyun has participated in Massey’s Multicultural Night every year as a part of a delegation representing Korea. He worked collaboratively to plan the group’s presentation including set-up, artwork, decorations, traditional clothing and food and logistics. Given Chihyun’s fascination with computers and programming, he was drawn to Massey’s Robotics Team, where he had the opportunity to program and solve problems with their robot. The Robotics Team opened Chihyun’s eyes to computer programming as an enjoyable and rewarding career, and not just a hobby. Outside the school community, Chihyun volunteers his time at a Korean language tutoring class. He is responsible for helping young students learn the Korean language and even leads the lessons at times. Chihyun intends to study Computer Science next year at the University of Windsor. |
Tuyet Tram Phan, Westview Freedom Academy |
Tuyet Tram arrived at Westview Freedom Academy from Vietnam in September 2018. She has participated in many school activities and has taken advantage of supports available in the community to help newcomers adjust to Canadian life. Active in many of Westview’s extracurricular activities, Tuyet Tram took on a leadership role in running Westview’s Remembrance Day ceremony. She is also a member of the school’s Art Club, Music Club, and 5 Km running Club. Tuyet Tram engaged in some of the services provided by the Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor including a science program and summer program and volunteering for Halloween and other activities. Tuyet Tram intends to take the Bachelor of Commerce (Business Administration) Co-Op Education at the University of Windsor. |
Aoxing Xu, Belle River District High School |
Aoxing arrived at Belle River District High School from China in September 2017 in his Gr. 10 year. He is an outstanding academic student, and has been on the Honour Roll every year during his high school career. While at Belle River, Aoxing became proficient in Math and developed a passion for problem-solving. He was also part of Belle River’s Science Olympics team that competed at the University of Windsor. Aoxing is a member of Belle River’s badminton team under coach Grant Chudyk. Aoxing intends to study math and statistics at McMaster University. |

Yanyu Sun, Riverside Secondary School |
Yanyu Sun arrived in Windsor from China in September 2018 as an International Student and is currently completing her final year at Riverside Secondary School. She has maintained a strong academic average, sought out opportunities to immerse herself in the school community and has volunteered her time giving back to the students of Riverside. During her four years at Riverside, Yanyu has been a member of the Jack.org chapter, Riverside’s Student Mental Health Advocacy club and has volunteered in our school’s Peer Tutoring program. Despite some health challenges that Isabella is faced with on a daily basis, her warm smiling face and friendly disposition can always be found in and around the halls of Riverside. Yanyu plans to attend the University of Windsor and has accepted an offer in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. |
Yujin Wang, Vincent Massey Secondary School |
Yanshan began studying with Vincent Massey Secondary School and she is completing her final year at the GEC Virtual Secondary School. Yujin as a great passion for media arts and film production. She shows strong initiative and exceptional leadership skills by engaging in activities outside of school in preparation to enter her field of study. Yujin plans to continue her education at Ontario College of Art & Design University to study Fine Arts. |
Yanshan Xu, Vincent Massey Secondary School |
Yanshan began her studies with Vincent Massey Secondary School and she is completing her final year at the GEC Virtual Secondary School. Yanshan has been involved in several school-based programs related to her future pathway and love of design. Yanshan has previously been involved in activities at Vincent Massey such as the Comedy Club. Outside of school Yanshan works with children as a dance and art tutor. Yanshan plans to continue her education at Ontario College of Art & Design University to study Digital Futures. |

Biajun Jiang, Vincent Massey Secondary School |
Biajun (Jack) Jiang arrived from China in September 2017 and completed Grades 7 and 8 at Talbot Trail Public School. He completing his final year at Vincent Massey Secondary School. As an International Student from China, Jack has notably overcome language barriers, cultural differences, as well as divergent educational systems. He has maintained a strong academic average and excellent learning skills, initiative, dedication and work habits. Jack has been involved in extracurricular activities at Massey including the Computer Science Club and written several mathematics contests and competitions, excelling in these areas. Furthermore, Jack is part of the Ambassador's Club, where he welcomes new students from all over the world and creates connections for newcomers to our building. Jack plans to continue his education at the University of Waterloo in Mathematics with Co-op. Jack is an intelligent person who works with exceptional dedication at the tasks he takes on. He has a strong desire to succeed and is always more than willing to put in the time and effort it takes to achieve his goals. Not only does he maintain academic excellence, but he also has exceptional time-management skills. Jack has diverse interests, and his exemplary work ethic allows him to reach his full potential in every avenue that he pursues. Jack’s intelligence, dedication, maturity, and leadership make him a great candidate for the post-secondary program he pursues. |
Jiayi Heng, Walkerville Collegiate Institute |
Jiayi (Rebecca) Heng is a very talented visual artist who joined the WCCA program at Walkerville Collegiate Institute in September 2021. She never wavered in her goal of pursuing post secondary opportunities in Canada and hopes of a career in North America. She will attend Sheridan College in the new multi-disciplinary Bachelor of Craft & Design program. Specifically, she will be studying furniture, glass, ceramics and industrial design. Ultimately, she hopes to work in stage design and was so excited to have been a part of Walkeville's production of The Addams Family. When Rebecca came to Canada from Beijing, China, she was fortunate to have her parents and brother here as added support. When asked what she enjoys most about Canada, she immediately responded with "the quiet". |
