Math Talk

Math Talks are a very important part of the GECDSB Flexible Math Block.

There are many different ways to approach Math Talks including using the Number Talks by Sherry Parrish and websites like Which One Doesn't BelongEstimation 180Visual PatternsMath Is VisualWould You Rather, and many more.

While the options listed above are all great, we spent some time digging into the Minilessons books by Cathy Fosnot for two reasons:

  1. All schools have at least one (1) copy of each of the 5 Minilessons Books (Early Add./Sub.; Extending Add./Sub.; Early Mult./Div.; Extending Mult./Div.; and, Fractions, Decimals, and Percents)
  2. The "number strings" provided in these books are extremely helpful for building number fluency with intentionality.
