Police Vulnerable​ Sector Check

As a condition of employment with Greater Essex County District School Board, all successful candidates will be required to provide a satisfactory police record check. In addition to the satisfactory police record check one may be required to obtain a police record check that includes a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).  This check is required where an individual is in a position of trust or authority over vulnerable persons, including students.  Prospective employees may not commence employment until the appropriate police screening documentation is received by the Human Resources Department.  Costs incurred in obtaining the PVSC is the responsibility of the candidate.

The Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) can be completed through the candidate's local police jurisdiction.  

The Board will accept satisfactory PVSC’s that name another school board and other employers (i.e. daycare centres, OCT, and employers that would require a police check for vulnerable persons) in Ontario and obtained within the last six (6) months.

International Language Instructor - Mandarin

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications from interested, qualified candidates for the position of International Language Instructor -Mandarin. International Language Supply Instructor will instruct classes on Saturday mornings at a school site(s). Classes begin at 9:30a.m. and end at 12:00p.m commencing October 4, 2025.

Job Summary

Position: International Language Instructor - Mandarin

Duties: Instructing students to learn the language. 

Term of appointment: October 2025 to May 9, 2026. This position is a 25 week assignment, extendable on an annual basis by agreement between both employer and employee. 

Salary: $40.06 per hour (including pay for Vacation and Statutory Holidays) in accordance with the  OSSTF Continuing Education Instructors Collective Agreement.

Nature & Scope of Position:

  • Demonstrate strong collaborative, presentation, written and oral communication skills to support the delivery of the program.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, anti-racist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
  • Assist with the promotion of the International Languages Program.
  • Experience working with youth and adult students would be considered an asset.

Manager of Facility Services

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications from interested, qualified, team oriented individuals for the Non-Bargaining 35 hr full time, position of Manager of Facility Services.  The position reporting directly to the Superintendent of Business and Treasurer is expected to begin as soon as possible.

The Manager of Facility Services is responsible for efficiently leading all aspects of the Board’s Facility Services operations including custodial, maintenance, and construction of school facilities.  The Manager is responsible for ensuring a safe, functional, clean and sustainable learning environment for all students, staff and communities, in compliance with all applicable legislations, regulations and policies.  The ideal candidate has proven leadership skills, embraces environmental sustainability, builds strong relationships, resolves problems with an equity mindset and strategically leads at a high level.

Nature & Scope of Position

  • Responsible for leading multi-disciplinary teams within the Facility Services department including management, trades, custodial, maintenance and clerical, while maintaining service excellence, in alignment with legislative requirements and the GECDSB’s strategic priorities, mission and vision Manage employee relations, including recruitment, training, performance management and conflict resolution, in accordance with collective agreements and Board policies.
  • Collaborate with other school boards to identify, monitor and evaluate best practices for operations and maintenance.  
  • Collaborate effectively with school administrators, teaching staff, community groups and other internal and external stakeholders to address facility needs and concerns.
  • Develop and implement robust preventative and predictive maintenance programs to optimize asset lifespan and minimize operational disruptions.
  • Direct and coordinate the preparation of reports and recommendations as required on matters related to areas of responsibility. 
  • Provide recommendations of best practices that align with legislative requirements and industry standards and practices.
  • Responsible for adherence to Board policies and procedures and all applicable legislations, regulations, building codes, and health and safety standards (i.e. Ontario Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Education guidelines). 
  • Develop and manage the Facility Services department budget, including commodities, energy, contract services, fleet vehicles and equipment, ensuring cost-effective practices are in place.
  • Develop and manage the capital / renewal budget.
  • Direct ongoing inspection of buildings, sites and equipment for needed repairs, including technological education equipment in secondary schools. 
  • Conduct risk assessments including identifying system gaps, developing and implementing measures, while reducing impact on school buildings and operations. 
  • Ensure emergency preparedness and physical security at all facilities, and after-hour calls.
  • Oversee the functions of design, drawings and specifications, and construction management through the use of internal and external resources for renewal and construction of new school facilities and additions.   
  • Oversee rental operations of board facilities in support of community use and partnerships with the Board. 
  • Assist in negotiation and administration of collective agreements pertaining to custodial, maintenance and clerical staff.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, anti-racist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations. Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Business and Treasurer.

Qualifications

  • Post secondary degree or diploma in Engineering, Business, or a related field is required, or equivalent, as approved by the Board.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in facility operations and management, with at least 5 – 7 years in a senior leadership or managerial role, preferably within a large institution or public sector environment.  
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and interpreting collective agreements is required.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and groups both within and outside the Board is required.
  • Must have access to transportation throughout Windsor and Essex County.

Health and Safety Officer

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications from interested, qualified, team oriented individuals for the Non-Bargaining 35 hr full time, position of Health and Safety Officer.  The position reporting directly to the Superintendent of Business and Treasurer is expected to begin as soon as possible.

This posting is for one of two Health and Safety Officers who are jointly responsible for facilitating the development, implementation, administration and maintenance of the Board’s Occupational Health and Safety policies and programs across all sites. The Health and Safety Officers ensure that the Board complies with all applicable legislation, guidelines and standards regarding Occupational Health and Safety with the objective of ensuring that all reasonable measures are taken to protect the health and safety of all staff, students and the general public.  The Health and Safety Officers advise on safety standards, regulations, and legislative compliance and make recommendations to improve the health and safety of our employees.

Nature & Scope of Position

Work collaboratively with the Board’s current Health and Safety Officer to:

  • Maintain, develop and update Board procedures, programs and best management practices necessary for compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, associated regulations and other legislation applicable to the education sector.
  • Administer the Board’s Health & Safety policies, procedures and programs in co-operation with members of the Board’s administration and staff.
  • Provide timely and accurate information regarding health and safety issues, policies and best practices.
  • Liaise and act as a resource to Board employees, Principals, Supervisors, Senior Administration and regulatory agencies (e.g. Ministry of Labour, Public Health, Ministry of the Environment, Fire and Police Departments etc.).
  • Ensure existence and functionality of the Board’s Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Act as an advisor to the Board’s Joint Health & Safety Committees, ensuring compliance with monthly inspections and quarterly meetings, consultation on new programs and processes, training for committee members and co-ordination of responses to concerns. 
  • Assist with the development and delivery of employee training programs as required by legislation, Board policy and training on specialized health and safety topics (e.g. New hire orientation, asbestos, first air, CPR, WHMIS, inspections, ergonomics etc.).
  • Develop safe work procedures/practices for specific job and process functions.
  • Perform on site safety audits and inspection of schools and buildings, evaluate performance, identify unsafe work conditions, practices and procedures, recommend corrective action and implement follow-up assessments.   
  • Work with site staff to mitigate job site risks and develop response measures to remediate the issues.
  • Develop and co-ordinate legislatively required inspections of all facilities and equipment for compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and guidelines (e.g. annual lifting device inspections etc.)
  • Coordinate required testing to identify and address potential hazards.
  • Assist in the development of emergency plans to manage internal and external emergencies of a localized and/or system-wide nature.
  • Respond to and provide consultation and support for incidents/accidents, critical injury investigations, work refusals, work stoppages and investigation of unsafe working conditions. Support and collaborate with Wellness Officers to manage WSIB claims and reduce accident frequency and severity levels by improving health and safety practices. 
  • Assist in the maintenance of the On-Line Incident Reporting Tool ensuring data is complete and submissions and responses are completed in a timely manner.  Ensure responses are thorough and complete.  Prepare reports highlighting to management trends and areas of concern etc.
  • Collaborate with members of the Facility Services department, Human Resources department, Superintendent of Education – Student Well-being and other departments within the Board to promote and maintain a psychologically healthy and safe workplace. 
  • Maintenance of the Board’s Workplace Violence Program.
  • Maintain the Board’s WHMIS and Personal Protective Equipment programs. 
  • Promote the health, safety, and well-being of all employees.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, anti-racist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Business and Treasurer.

Qualifications

  • Post-Secondary diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.  
  • A minimum of five (5) years experience related to Health and Safety. 
  • CRSP (Certified Registered Safety Professional), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), or CHSC (Certified Health and Safety Consultant) designation or working towards that designation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated high degree of communication (both verbal and written), public relations, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Minimum five years of experience in health and safety, preferably within education sector; experience in a unionized environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislation including a thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and other pertinent legislation relating to safety, e.g., EPA, Safe Drinking Water Act, Fire Code, AODA, etc. 
  • Strong research, analytical, problem-solving, strategic thinking and communication skills. 
  • Proven experience building collaborative working relationships and providing exemplary service to a diverse group of internal and external teams, departments, and individuals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

for the temporary Bargaining Unit position of Occasional Clerical Worker.

Temporary Student Support Worker

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites application packages from persons qualified for the position of Temporary Student Support Worker.  

   

All applicants applying for any of the occasional/temporary support positions listed below will be required to be available for day-to-day casual replacement assignments at various locations throughout Essex County and the City of Windsor.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Must be available for day-to-day casual replacement and long-term assignments at various school locations throughout the City of Windsor and Essex County. 
  • Support teacher(s) with the preparation of learning materials necessary to assist identified students.
  • Ensure the safety and supervision of students by using proper lifting techniques.
  • Implement Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) in compliance with Board Policy and training. 
  • Provide supervision of identified students in and around the school.
  • Support and ensure the dignity of students with their personal needs.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, anti-racist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
  • To work in consultation with the school-based team, implement and monitor programs that have been developed which support academic/cognitive skills, social skills, gross and fine motor abilities, communication skills and vocational skills.
  • Assume other duties/responsibilities related to student needs as determined by the Principal.

 

Rate of Pay:  $21.89- $29.91 an hour, plus 4% vacation pay.

 

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must possess a minimum of a Grade 12 Diploma.
  • Preference will be given to those applicants holding certificates from an accredited college for the successful completion of the following programs:
    • Educational Assistant Diploma
    • American Sign Language and Deaf Studies or American Sign Language Interpreter
    • Developmental Service Worker
    • Child and Youth Care
    • Early Childhood Educator
    • Experience and/or other related specialized training and/or certification in field. 
    • Possess demonstrable experience and competence in dealing with special needs students in a school or residential setting.

Temporary Support Staff – Support Worker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Temporary Support Staff - Support Worker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing to be effective as soon as possible.  All applicants applying for this occasional/temporary support position will be required to be available for day-to-day casual replacement assignments at various locations throughout Essex County and the City of Windsor.

Duties

The successful applicant, under the direction of the School Principal and/or his/her designate, will:

  • Provide oral and sign interpreting services to facilitate and augment communication for identified students.
  • Facilitate communication in and around the school for identified students.
  • Support the learning and special needs of identified students.
  • Participate in the maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Support the communication with parents/guardians.
  • Record daily observations and provide feedback to school administration and school-based team about student progress
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the student's IEP goals in consultation with teachers, administration and Special Education Services personnel.
  • Assume other duties/responsibilities specifically related to the functions of students on caseload as determined by the Principal and Superintendent of Education/Special Education Services.

Qualifications

  •  Successful completion of a Communicator's Certificate program from a recognized college.
  •  Preference will be given to applicants holding Interpretor Training Program certification.
  •  A demonstrated aptitude and competence in sign language.
  •  Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated aptitude and competence in working with special needs individuals in an educational or residential setting. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, anti-racist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
