First Nation Metis Inuit (FNMI) Student Support Worker (1 Position)

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications for its O.S.S.T.F.- P.S.S.P. Bargaining Unit for the position of First Nations, Metis and Inuit Student Support Worker - 1.0 F.T.E.  This is a 35 hour per week position that supports both elementary and secondary students. This position is a designated visible minority position. Applicants are encouraged to Self-Identify as the FNMI Student Support Worker position is a designated position.

Job Summary

DUTIES COMMENCING: September 2023
SALARY: $30.00 - $35.30

Nature & Scope of Position

  • Work closely with the Superintendent responsible for Indigenous education, staff and the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee to support improved Indigenous student achievement and well-being and enhance knowledge and awareness of all students about Indigenous cultures, histories and perspectives; 
  • Liaise with FNMI community members, parents/guardians, organizations and educators to partner, build and maintain positive relationships that result in improved confidence, cultural competence and student achievement for FNMI students; 
  • Meet with educators and support staff to develop and monitor individual student profiles which will consider the intellectual, spiritual, physical, and emotional/social well-being of FNMI students; 
  • Work with individual and small groups of self-identified FNMI students K-12 to support organizational skills, student learning and transitions; 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, antiracist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations;
  • Support professional development opportunities for educators in collaboration with the Teacher Consultant responsible for Indigenous Education that will increase knowledge and awareness of FNMI histories, cultures and perspectives; and, 
  • Support all duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Curriculum and Professional Learning. 

Qualifications

  • A deep understanding of the Indigenous culture and a familiarity with FNMI learnings/practices that will leverage teaching strategies and student learning. 
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively across cultures in different social settings and superior conflict resolution skills. 
  • The ability to facilitate and/or assist in cultural training/ceremonies, public speaking, opening prayers and providing blessings. 
  • An understanding of current and emerging issues of importance in Indigenous people and communities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and collaboration skills. 
  • A good understanding of health issues affecting youth and adults, such as FASD, drug and alcohol additions, intergenerational trauma, mental health and suicide. 
  • A good understanding of cultural differences and how they impact treatment approaches for children and youth. 
  • A high degree of enthusiasm, motivation and commitment in order to achieve the program’s goals and objectives.

  • Experience working with clients with Indigenous background is required.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous Language would be an asset. 
  • A degree in Indigenous Studies or a related discipline from an accredited university or college would be considered an asset but is not required.

Indigenous Cultural Resource and Land-Based Liaison

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications for the position of Indigenous Cultural Resource and Land Based Liaison - temporary - 1.0 F.T.E. This position falls within the O.S.S.T.F.-P.S.S.P. Bargaining Unit.

Nature & Scope of Position:

The successful applicant, under the direction of the Superintendent of Education responsible for Indigenous Education, will:

  • Work closely with the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee to provide mentoring, guidance and land based experiential learning opportunities to FNMI students across the GECDSB system.
  • Plan all details of land based and experiential learning opportunities for GECDSB Indigenous students.
  • Lead land based or other culturally based learning opportunities for GECDSB Indigenous students and their families.
  • Provide intensive supports to Indigenous learners to strengthen their cultural understandings and practices.
  • Participate as an integral member of the Open Minds Team
  • Identify strategies, milestones, and indicators to support Indigenous students to engage in learning and culturally based learning opportunities land based or otherwise.
  • Establish trusting relationships with Indigenous students, their families and communities.
  • Manage budgets aligned to culturally based learning experiences.
  • Collect and analyze data to monitor progress of achievement of the program’s goals and impact on student success throughout the GECDSB.
  • Plan for cultural events such as the Round Dance
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, antiracist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.
  • Support all duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Education.

Qualifications

  • A deep understanding of the systemic barriers and challenges that Indigenous students face in the education system and in the wider community.
  • A thorough understanding of culturally based and land-based learning.
  • Strong advocacy skills to support individual and collective student voice.
  • An understanding of the Board’s Strategic Priorities, the Student Achievement Plan and the Indigenous Education Action Plan.
  • A high degree of enthusiasm, motivation and commitment in order to achieve the program’s goals and objectives.
  • Superior organization and time management skills developed through years of progressive experience planning and facilitating large scale events with several participants
  • Experience working with clients with Indigenous background is required.

Temporary Information Technology Technician

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications from persons with the required qualifications
for the temporary Bargaining Unit position of Temporary Information Technology Technician. 

All successful applicants will be required to be available for day-to-day casual replacement and long-term assignments at various locations throughout Essex County and the City of Windsor.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Computer/Information Technology program at an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 3 years work-related experience, of which 1-2 years is in network, software, and troubleshooting, and resolution specific in PC platform.
  • Experience in Mac platform is considered an asset.
  • Good communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as participate as a team member.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for travel throughout Essex County is necessary.

Duties

  • Installation and upgrades of various hardware, software and operating system components for the desktop workstations, servers and peripherals.

Temporary Support Staff – Support Worker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Greater Essex County District School Board invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Temporary Support Staff - Support Worker for Deaf and Hard of Hearing to be effective as soon as possible.  All applicants applying for this occasional/temporary support position will be required to be available for day-to-day casual replacement assignments at various locations throughout Essex County and the City of Windsor.

Duties:

The successful applicant, under the direction of the School Principal and/or his/her designate, will:

  • Provide oral and sign interpreting services to facilitate and augment communication for identified students.
  • Facilitate communication in and around the school for identified students.
  • Support the learning and special needs of identified students.
  • Participate in the maintenance of specialized equipment.
  • Support the communication with parents/guardians.
  • Record daily observations and provide feedback to school administration and school-based team about student progress
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the student's IEP goals in consultation with teachers, administration and Special Education Services personnel.
  • Assume other duties/responsibilities specifically related to the functions of students on caseload as determined by the Principal and Superintendent of Education/Special Education Services.

Qualifications:

  •  Successful completion of a Communicator's Certificate program from a recognized college.
  •  Preference will be given to applicants holding Interpretor Training Program certification.
  •  A demonstrated aptitude and competence in sign language.
  •  Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated aptitude and competence in working with special needs individuals in an educational or residential setting.
